Election & beyond

Election to posts on the committee takes place at our Annual General Meeting in November. All members are encouraged to come to the AGM as it is where we decide who is going to shape the group for the next year. People wishing to stand will put their names forward at the end of September. At the AGM we read out the names of people wishing to stand for each position and take a vote. The out-going committee member will ensure that new committee members are given help and support during the handover of the role.

Any questions…

Brunel needs a new Membership Secretary….

What does the Membership Secretary do?

The most important role of the Membership Secretary is to welcome new members to the group. This usually takes the form of a welcome email, but they also play a key role in welcoming new members at social events and on ‘new members’ walks. The ideal person would be out going, lively and easy to talk to. The Membership secretary also answers general enquiry emails which come into the group email inbox.

Why do we need a Membership Secretary?

The group is nothing without the members! We need to keep track of how many members we have as we receive a contribution from Ramblers towards our costs from your membership subscriptions based on this figure. We have consistently grown in size as a group since we were founded 10 years ago. The Membership Secretary has a key role to play in this success. We also want to try and keep members; Ramblers finds lots of people leave after the first year, but if they renew their membership for a second year then they keep renewing for many years. We need to try and understand why people join, but don’t want to renew for a second year – we can use this information to improve the group and retain more members. Finally; we rely on ideas from the Membership Secretary to attract new members to the group through effective marketing.

How much time is involved?

The people on the committee give up time to help in the running of the group for everyone. The committee meets about 4 times a year; usually in the centre of Bristol on a weekday evening. The Membership Secretary needs to spend about 1 hour per week answering emails and maintaining our records. To do this role, you will need access to a computer. From time to time there are other actions for the Membership Secretary. All of the Committee take turns to help out on new members walks and to ‘host’ the pub night.
