Election & Beyond

Election to posts on the committee takes place at our Annual General Meeting in November. All members are encouraged to come to the AGM as it is where we decide who is going to shape the group for the next year. People wishing to stand will put their names forward at the end of September. At the AGM we read out the names of people wishing to stand for each position and take a vote. The out-going committee member will ensure that new committee members are given help and support during the handover of the role.

Any questions…

We need a new Secretary….

What does the Secretary do?

The most important role of the Secretary is to keep the group running smoothly. This involves organising committee meetings, taking minutes and collating them as a record. The Secretary is the main link between our group and the Avon Area Ramblers Division of which we are a member. This link is our main line of communication on local issues. Currently the Secretary also produces our newsletter which is distributed to all members. We have identified that we could improve the current newsletter, with increased member contributions and improved design. The ideal person for the Secretary role would be an organised and creative individual, who enjoys a bit of writing.

Why do we need a Secretary?

The Secretary plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the group. As the committee only meet up every quarter, we a record of what has been agreed to ensure we keep the group moving forwards. We are also bound by Charity Commission and Ramblers guidelines which require us keep a record of our meetings to ensure everything is above board and accountable. The Secretary is the ‘glue’ that binds the committee together!

How much time is involved?

The people on the committee give up time to help in the running of the group for everyone. The committee meets about 4 times a year; usually in the centre of Bristol on a weekday evening. The Secretary needs to spend about 4 hour per month collating minutes, organising meetings and writing & editing our newsletter. To do this role, you will need access to a computer. From time to time there are other actions for the Secretary. All of the Committee take turns to help out on new members walks and to ‘host’ the pub night.
