We Rely On Our Walk Leaders To Keep Our Club Going And Thriving!

There are people who love to share their favourite walks with others, who are prepared to give up a few hours of their time in order to pass on the experiences and the beauty of the British countryside.

We’ve had some excellent walks on the programme so far this year. But there is a real shortage now of walks of all types (1,2 and 3 Boot). We’re all busy people, for sure. But without walks, we have no walking group.

More than anything else, the growing numbers in the Brunel Group are due to the number and variety of great walks that we offer our members. (Helped by the fact that we're friendly with it!)

We rely entirely upon group members offering to lead walks. This page aims to provide as much help as possible for walk leaders, whether prospective or established.

What's needed for the Programme?

Our programme is updated regularly when new walks are received. You can submit a walk at any time. When thinking about the date for your walk, remember to allow time to go and do your pre-walk! Details that are needed for the programme:

  • Walk grading and distance - see the before walking page for gradings, but if you want a sanity check, ask an experienced walk leader or the Programme Secretary.

  • Meeting point and departure time - if it's not one of the normal places listed on the programme page, then it's very helpful to provide a weblink to a map and/or a map reference.

  • A description of where the walk will take place and broadly what's involved - it helps people decide if it's the right walk for them and means less people are likely to need to ring you.
  • Your contact phone number - it may be worth giving your mobile for use on the day, as well as a home number for in advance.

  • Most walks finish at a pub or cafe. Try to have somewhere in my mind for when the walk has finished.

How Can I Submit My Walk?

You can submit your walk by emailing us or filling in the Submit Your Walk form on this page. The form will remind you to supply all useful information, like whether a packed lunch is required or is your walk finishing at a public house or cafe.

How Can I Lead A Walk; I’ve Never Done It Before?

Everyone started this way; it’s not so hard once you do it. Speak to someone who’s done it before – better still, ask them to pre-walk with you.

You can download our guide to Walk Leading. Our extra guide to Hill Walk Leading is also available.

What Should I Do If A Footpath Is Blocked?

Pre-walking our routes not only makes the leader look incredibly assured and confident on the day (well, it helps!), it's also that we do sometimes find paths that are blocked or changed, meaning re-routes are required. If you do find an issue with a path when pre-walking, please report it, so something can be done about it. Here is advice on how to do this - or you can just complete this report form.

Does this work? Yes! Richard H reported a footbridge that was missing, and next time he went back to the area they'd actioned it and put in this new one.
